No AI slop policy

Last updated on 5 November 2026

We work hard gathering and organising information so that Neighbo has real, verified information about the places and activities in your neighbourhood. We strictly ban AI-generated text and images because that slop would undermine the whole point of Neighbo.

Also, we personally hate the AI bullshit that is going on in the world right now.

What Neighbo does not allow

We do not allow the following to be published on Neighbo:

  • AI-generated text such as place descriptions or summaries or chatbots.
  • AI-generated images such as photos or illustrations.
  • Anything generated by AI without human oversight.

That means we don’t do it, and we won’t accept it from you when you contribute information to Neighbo. We actively try to prevent it from appearing on Neighbo, and so we may choose to not publish certain information we receive if we suspect it to be AI-generated (even if it’s just the vibe).

What Neighbo does allow

Though we are strict about banning AI slop, we are not against using AI where it is appropriate.

Here are some examples of where we think it is OK to use AI:

  • Using AI to review text that you have written yourself.
eg Using ChatGPT or Claude for feedback on grammar, accuracy, or clarity in what you have written.
  • Using AI to translate text to your own language.
eg If your native language is not English it is OK for you to use AI to translate the text on a Neighbo page into a language you understand. However if you are contributing text to Neighbo about your business or event then we think you should pay a professional translator for any translations (they’ll do a better job than AI can anyway, avoiding making your business say something inappropriate).
  • Using AI tools to make minor image edits.
eg Using an AI image editing tool to remove a blemish in a photo or improve the colour is OK. However it is not OK to add objects that weren’t actually there or to generate a new background; a doctored “photo” which doesn’t reflect reality is not allowed. It is not OK to use ChatGPT or Gemini to generate an image to publish on Neighbo.
  • Using AI to generate code, as long as it is reviewed and fully understood by humans.
eg We use AI coding tools to create Neighbo. The website you are looking at right now is mostly created by hand, but some of our backend data processing systems have significant amounts of AI-generated code. We have two people manually review each change to the code made by AI tools.
  • Using AI to look up information on Neighbo.
For the full experience we recommend that you visit Neighbo in your web browser, or use our mobile apps (coming soon!). However we do allow AI agents to access Neighbo and look up information on your behalf, albeit with slightly limited information compared to looking it up yourself. We still think you’ll get better results looking it up yourself because we made Neighbo for people, not machines.

Feedback and questions

We’re new to this. AI is new to us all. We’re sure our AI slop policy will evolve over time, however we are certain that we’re never going to open up Neighbo to rampant AI slop.

Are we restricting enough? Are we not restricting enough? Please get in touch with us if you have thoughtful suggestions about how we can tweak our AI policies to get them right.
